Road trip routes
This route will take you on the 2 most spectacular roads in Romania: Transalpina and Transfagarasan. This is a 3 days trips in order to have enough time to stop and admire the scenery. I recomend that you make this trip during the week time, becasue in the weekends, the road can be very crowded.
On the first day we leave Bucharest on A1 highway towards Pitesti then we enter the DN 7C towards Curtea de Arges. A first stop can be in Curtea de Arges to visit the monastery with the same name. Then right before the entrance to Transfagarasan, a mandatory stop is the Poienari fortress. Here after climbing quite a tiring stair, we can admire the first hairpins that lead us to the Vidraru dam. From here till late in the evening we have all the time to enjoy Transfagarasan. Tonight we will sleep in Cartisoara where you can find some nice accommodations.
Curtea de Arges Monastery
The next day we will start with sightseeing of Sibiu, then we will head to the starting point of Transalpina, Sebes. We have enough time to stop at Taul Bistra dam or lake Oasa. You can wait for the evening when the road is less crowded and we can enjoy the the most spectacular part of Transalpina between Obarsia Lotrului and Ranca.
Tau Lake and Dam
Oasa Lake and Dam
The third day begins with the descend from Ranca to Novaci then we will visit the two caves in the area: Polovragi and Muierii. If you have not visited it before you can stop and visit Horezu monastery which is on the way. The last part of the road route overlaps with the first day and if you want, you can make a small variation and take the road parallel to the highway, the DN 7C.
