Road trip routes
A route that proposes as a pretext for a 2-day ride, visiting some salt mines and some medieval citadels in the east of Transylvania and the Eastern Carpathians. The route can be done in 2 days or if you want to relax and visit each of the proposed objectives, it is better to take 3 free days.
The route of the first day of the trip connects several saxon fortresses. Starting from Targu Mures we stop first in Sighisoara to visit the medieval fortress, then head to the following objectives: the peasant fortresses of Crit, Viscri and Saschiz. The last fortress that we can visit on our way is the Rupea Fortress, which was recently renovated. From Rupea we will cross some hills to the Eastern Carpathians. Just past DN12 and we start crossing the mountains. On the first part of the road to Targu Secuiesc, the asphalt is bad, sometimes it is scrubbed by potholes, then after Targu Secuiesc the road is perfect because it was paved in 2015. This last segment to Lepsa is very spectacular, the road climbs up to almost 1200m altitude. Then there is a quite pleasant area, full of curves, but unfortunately some villages.
On day 2 we will have fewer places to visit, but there will be more spectacular roads. First we will go to Marasesti, where we can visit the mausoleum raised to the heroes of the First World War, then we will cross the mountains back to Transylvania through the Trotus pass. There is a more relaxing segment between Mirecurea Ciuc and Gheorgheni but extremely pleasant to ride, then we will cross another pass between Gheorgheni and Praid. After a day full of serpentines and hundreds of curves, we can relax in the lake in Praid or Sovata or visit the 2 salt mines. The end of the route is in Targu Mures where if you have time you can visit the old center of the city.
