Road trip routes
In this trip you will ride on some of the most beautiful roads South of Apuseni Mountains and in Parang Mountains area: Transalpina, the road between Obarsia Lotrului and Petrosani or Valisoarei Gorge.
I proposed as a starting poitn for this trip Alba Iulia city because it's a beautiful city and you can spend here at least one day if yu have the time, to visit the historic center, which was newly renovated. From here we head east and cross the gentle hills of the Tarnavelor region. Then we turn to the West and soon we get to Turda where you can stop to see the Saltmine or explore Turda Canyon. We will then head a little bit to the South in order to get on the road crossing the Valisoara Canyon and to visit the village Rimetea, recently placed on the UNESCO list. Then we enter the river valley of Aries and here we go upstream until we reach Arieseni where we can spend the night. My recommendation is to try to arrive as early as possible in order to have time to visit the Scarisoara glacier or the cave Poarta lui Ionele.

From Arieseni, the first thing you have to do is to cross the scenic road between Vartop and Baita: dozens of curves and hairpins in the beautiful decor of the Apuseni Mountains. At Stei we turn left on DN76 towards Deva. This would be enjoyable and relaxing as the landscape which is full of hills and forests but unfortunately the road is repairing for more than 10 years. In Deva you can climb to the fortress then do not not miss Hunedoara Castle. Furthermore we head to Petrosani where we enter the Jiet river valley heading towards Obarsia Lotrului. Again we get a very bad road surface but with a very high potential due to very spectacular mountain landscape. From Obarsia Lotrului we enter Transalpina road and we'll take it to the north. If you have time, you can give a run to Ranca to get a taste of the most spectacular segment of mountain pass Urdele. Transalpina ends in Sebes and from here are just a few kilometers to Alba Iulia.
